Freelance translation services (English, French, German) from a graduate in Modern Languages (French and German - Kent) with a record of in-depth exposure to the art of translation in postgraduate study and diverse experience. I can boast versatility: so far I have successfully completed projects in the academic domain (an ongoing series of lengthy academic articles on Vietnamese history), basic science / technical material (a patent and technical drawings), business / legal fare (terms and conditions material, formal correspondence imparting the authorities and international legislation), IT-related material (a PC / PC software instruction manual), and medical-related material (several medical reports for the Ministry of Defence). Good rates and willing to work wholly flexibly (including weekends if required) to meet mentioned deadlines. I also consider other projects such as proof-reading; get in touch for details. Clients include Swinburne University, Australia, who have submitted me multiple lengthy textbook articles to translate from French into English, and the agency K International, who have been delegating me medical reports to translate (German to English) as part of an exclusive 4-year contract they were awarded from the Ministry of Defence. MY APPROACH TO MY WORK
I guarantee to take pride in my work. Translation is definitely not just a matter of replacing words with words (anyone can do that!). But producing professional quality translations is not just a matter of arranging comprehensible phrases for individual instances: it is up to the translator alone to convince the translation's reader of the message of the original, especially if that message is supposed to be authoritative from the start. I am a hard worker and have an excellent eye for detail. I do not overlook the need to use initiative (especially when research is necessary!). I am devoted to remembering my priorities as I produce a new article whose message remains faithful to the original, while taking care not to make the mistake of overlooking subtle linguistic conventions in the target language. I am disposed to creativity and ingenuity and I believe that this helps tremendously. As humorous as "bad" translations can be to those who read them, it is a fact that failure to observe these conventions can lead to misunderstanding or worse!

I do my work using MS Office or Open Office. I have used MS packages for several years and currently use Word and Open Office on a domestic PC.

It's fair to say that as businesses become increasingly complex and ambitious, maintaining a dependable administration system becomes ever more of a challenge; even for sole traders like myself. I believe that the transaction process outlined here will offer piece of mind that you will never have to worry about having to try to find out at what stage your project actually is my end; and that it will also serve to avert disputes as to whether or not I have been paid for a particular project.
Stage 1: Ascertaining and accepting the project
It all begins with the client contacting me to ask me if I would complete (or contribute toward) Translation Project X. As standard procedure I will determine not only the number of words the project contains and the due fee and unit rate (including which currency is to be used) but also the subject matter (have you reached the right translator for this particular translation project?) and whether or not I should have it completed by a certain time. Furthermore, I will not accept any projects prior to determining the payment method - I have already accepted bank transfer, Paypal, Moneybookers, Western Union and bankers cheque (air mail) and I continue to welcome these options today. If you are less than used to "modern" payment methods, I can instruct you on how to use Paypal and Moneybookers (these are online account systems) and Western Union (a service which has many local offices located around the world).
Stage 2: The return of the project
I will send the project back to you after I have completed it to the best of my ability. I proofread all my work as standard procedure for quality purposes - I'm sure we've all read translations that are "just wrong" even though they are 100% grammatically correct. I expect you to confirm receipt of the project, whereupon I will allow you some time to judge that it is to your satisfaction (or that of your client).
Stage 3: The pursuit of the paid fee
Unless informed otherwise I will, after a certain time period, proceed with the payment. I can and will accommodate existing policies where payments are made at the end of the month / in a 30-day period etc. If I am to be paid by bank transfer, please don't be offended if I ask for your bank details - it helps me when I am looking at my statement to determine which due sums have reached me and which have not.
